Witnessing

Read original publication

Just witness and witness, don’t chase anything away, give everything your attention. Witness your mind, witness your emotions, witness your body. Don’t ignore anything, do the opposite. Learn to give attention to the most ignored parts of your experience, direct it there.

In witnessing our minds, we see its madness, its insanity. We see how incoherent the mind is, how much circular reasoning exists in it, how dissatisfied it is, how accusatory. We see how crazy we are, how irrational. We learn to not obey it.

In witnessing our emotions, we see how much suppressed pain and suffering we carry, how much tears we have in us, how much anger and hatred. We see how miserable we are, how discontent, how abused. We learn to not live against ourselves any longer.

In witnessing our body, we see how tense it is, how restless, how uncomfortable. We see how we have been mistreating it with bad food and unhealthy habits, with overworking ourselves, with lack of sleep, how we’ve been ignoring its calls for mercy. We learn to rest and relax.

Witnessing yourself always remains the most fundamental spiritual practice. It teaches us to give attention to ourselves, to listen to ourselves. And giving attention is the most fundamental act of love. It leads to insight, forgiveness and compassion, and ultimately it leads to bliss, joy, peace and freedom.

Love yourself and everything will follow.
