Is it true that some people can meditate themselves into an out of body experience? How is that possible?

It’s true. But the out of body experience also happens in the mind. The ordinary daily state of consciousness which is considered normal is, in reality, a highly unnatural state of fragmented consciousness, full of imaginary identities both of yourself and other people. That’s what is sometimes called the dream state. God, to the extent that it is believed to exist, also exists in the mind, as the ultimate identity above yourself and others. It’s kinda like a multilayered cake of imagination haha. So the part of you that can have an out of body experience (sometimes called “ego”) is ultimately not real, it is imagined. But it is perceived to be real for as long as you believe its existence and identify with it, mistakenly thinking that it’s you. So, the out of body experience happens in the mind, not reality. It happens to a small, imagined part of “you” with the scenery being the larger part of your imagination.

But it feels as real as anything else. Just like in a night dream you identify with the dream character even though the scenery, and all other characters in the dream are ultimately the creation of your mind, but during dreaming it doesn’t appear that way, it is forgotten. Only when you wake up in the morning you can realize that the dream wasn’t real. So, similarly, only when you awaken in life it can be seen that ego was never real also. That’s basically what self-realization is. In enlightenment, both meditation and out of body experiences are no longer possible and night dreaming ceases as well, or at least becomes lucid.

You can think of meditation as the practice of temporarily focusing attention on something other than the conscious activity of the mind so that the deeper contents are revealed and experienced. So it’s perfectly possible to have all kinds of literally crazy experiences in meditation, but they are not in themselves the goal. The goal is openness and acceptance to whatever happens in meditation, without resistance or judgment. Through acceptance and self-love the dreaming is dissolved.
