The idea that animals cannot attain enlightenment comes from Buddhism. It’s a silly idea, a shadow of human vanity. Animals don’t need to attain, they were never lost to begin with. Only humans get lost, so there’s a need to find. Enlightenment is nothing but stepping out of confusion.
