Do modest people really overlook their successes or they just choose to ignore them?

Neither - they know exactly what their successes are and they do not ignore them, it’s impossible to ignore a success, otherwise there is no such thing as success. They choose to hide them, don’t show them, don’t talk about them, because not bragging about their successes is one of their successes.

It’s easy to see. If you have not achieved anything, a total failure, you cannot be modest, because you have nothing to be modest about. Being modest means being successful but not displaying it.

So, there’s really no modesty in humility, it’s inauthentic. Authenticity means being modest when the situation calls for it, and being immodest when it calls for it, also. There is no difference. In other words, it’s based on what is expected from you and on your own needs at the moment, not how you would like to be seen. So, truly humble people can sometimes come off as arrogant, but you’d be mistaken.
