Does IQ have anything to do with spiritual enlightenment?
No. IQ measures the ability of the brain to predict complex patterns in its environment. Every animal predicts its environment, that’s basically the definition of what we call “behavior”. IQ has a genetic component to it, as animals also vary greatly in intelligence. It’s not personal, it’s like height or muscle strength.
But intelligence has nothing to do with wisdom and well-being. In fact, the correlation might even be reverse, because a person with a high IQ has a natural tendency to analyze themselves and other people. Combined with a thirst for knowledge, a persistent illusion that knowledge brings happiness, and a frequent distaste kids have for them in teenage years, this can lead to all sorts of trouble. If I remember correctly, research discovered a positive correlation of IQ and depression, and it’s not a coincidence.
So, IQ can be a curse in disguise. Intelligent people tend to think too much. Fortunately, learning to love yourself genuinely has nothing to do with IQ. It will be the hardest thing you will do, and the most beautiful thing you will do, regardless of your general intelligence. That’s the only true source of wisdom.
Intelligence, when separated from the mind, can be enjoyed same as the body, because brain is a part of the body. It can be a wonderful source of creativity. Mixed up with the mind and given too much significance, it can bring you misery.
