Do you ever enjoy the experience of emotional pain?

If, in your spiritual practice, you reached the stage where you are able to somewhat enjoy your emotional pain, this is very big progress, and I congratulate you on that! I say “somewhat” because if you enjoyed it more, you wouldn’t feel the need to ask this question and confirm that you’re on the right track. You are.

Both emotional pain and emotional pleasure are created by the mind. Both are ultimately illusory, both are seen to be empty in enlightenment. In this process, the mind learns that there is no difference between all emotions, that all pairs of negative-positive emotion (e.g. sadness-happiness, pain-pleasure, pride-shame) are empty in their opposition. Or, a much better way to say that would be that the mind unlearns to differentiate. Crying becomes blissful. Emotional pain becomes pleasurable. Fear becomes welcome. All boundaries, all distinctions dissolve. And ultimately, through that, the emotional body dissolves, too. That’s the only way it can dissolve, otherwise there will always be some pain in you which you have not yet accepted. You have to learn to love your pain to accept it with unconditional love. Your question indicates that it has started to happen.

So yes, it is very normal. Enjoy every emotion, everything that arises in you, approach it all and experience it all in totality, and you will slowly be moving closer and closer towards the center.
