In an enlightened romantic relationship, what role does monogamy play?

None. Monogamy is a stupid promise two people give each other to be with one another even if the desire to do so is no longer there, for the fear that someone will get hurt. By being afraid of the pain of loss, they lock themselves into a cage of hatred.

Enlightened people don’t get hurt by such silly things as a lover who does not wish to longer be with you leaving you. Or a lover who wants some sexual variety. What good can possibly come out of making this person stay? Or by denying them their desires out of your own insecurity?

In an enlightened relationship, people stay with each other for as long as they wish to, and not a second more. Can it be for life? Sure! Can other people call it “monogamy”? Of course! They can call it whatever they like. The only way two enlightened people (which would already be a huge rarity) could call it is “we like it this way”. If they don’t want to have sex with other people, they don’t. If they do want to have sex with other people, but still live together, they do. They do whatever they like, and they can always speak about what they want, without their feelings getting hurt.
