Schizophrenia, based on the symptoms, is just ego on the verge of collapse. The process of spiritual enlightenment has distinct schizophrenic features, e.g. hallucinations, depersonalization of thought and emotion, disorientation, paranoia etc. Pretty much every symptom of schizophrenia I have experienced myself at some point through the process.

So it looks like a very weak, collapsing, disoriented and scared ego. Most definitely not an inflated ego, this would be narcissism, megalomania, etc.
