Gautama died when he became enlightened. The body which he thought belonged to him, continued functioning and teaching. What he became is impossible to describe. You can say he became nothing, or he became consciousness or he became his body. But whatever thing he used to call Gautama, which believed it existed and owned the body died in enlightenment.
