Can enlightenment be lost?

No.

Enlightenment is not awakening, enlightenment isn’t even self-realization. Enlightenment is your destiny, it’s complete union with The Absolute, and you are going to arrive there whether you want it or not, it’s just the matter of resisting the truth, turning away from it.

Most people resist all their lives, until death comes for them, and even then.

Awakening just gives you a glimpse of the destination. Most people don’t go deeper than that. They are satisfied, they are much happier than before, and most of them are convinced that everything else will “happen on its own”. The truth is, they are afraid to go deeper, they are still not ready to accept the pain of the absolute truth.

In self-realization the truth is known. But it is still possible to stop there, to keep the deeper levels of dreaming and the enlightened ego and soul. Most self-realized people who are outwardly spiritual and still find some meaning in spiritual books and scriptures stop there. It is rare to stop at self-realization, but it’s possible.

In enlightenment, there is no more ego, no soul, no God, no division between divine and mundane, soul and body, body and energy, body and mind, mind and consciousness, ego and egolessness, enlightenment and ignorance, Nirvana and Samsara. All dualities have been lost, including the duality between duality and non-duality. It’s very hard to describe this state. You become extremely ordinary again, way more ordinary than you have ever been before. There’s no coming back from here. There is nowhere to go. Transcendence itself is transcended. Enlightenment becomes a non-concept. Only life remains.
