Which virtue is better, kindness or honesty? Are they complementary or mutually exclusive?
They are mutually exclusive, because kindness as a virtue can only arise out of dishonesty. True kindness is not a virtue, it’s an absence of all virtues. As long as you consider yourself virtuous, how can you truly be kind to those who are not? Your kindness would then be arrogant, off-putting, fake. It would be “let me help you become like me” type of kindness. Bleh. Authentic kindness is not a virtue, you’re just kind because and when you want to be and you ask for nothing in return.
