Boredom doesn’t spawn crime. Restlessness, anxiety, fear, insecurity, hatred and greed spawn crime. Poverty spawns crime also, and it’s the only crime that shouldn’t be a crime. If a desperate person who has nothing to eat steals food from a supermarket, it’s not greed, it’s survival. How callous we must be to call that a crime. Also, victimless crimes (mainly prostitution and drugs) shouldn’t be crimes, that’s just moralizing, not legalizing,it’s the modern day equivalent of blasphemy.

People who commit crimes shouldn’t be punished, they should be treated. If they pose danger to society, isolated from it, yes, but treated. Our rehabilitation system is not merely isolation, it’s punishment because the living conditions there are inhumane, it’s the opposite of treatment, which is why people that go through it are more likely to commit another crime in the future, not less.
