Is Buddhist enlightenment the same as Jesus'?
First of all, we can never know. It is impossible to determine someone’s state of consciousness from what they’re saying or their behavior. Even a Buddha can not tell another Buddha. There’s a reason for that hehe.
But we can speculate, of course.
From a Buddhist perspective, Jesus was probably an enlightened Boddhisatva. He was in a state of consciousness which is nowadays often referred to as “loving awareness”. He was overfilled with love, joy, and unconditional acceptance. As well as compassion for other suffering beings. Boddhisatvas know the Buddha, but they are not full Buddhas yet. Compassion is still a relationship, it’s a beautiful one, the highest one, but it’s still one. Loving awareness gives way to emptiness as compassion dissolves. Boddhisatvas aren’t yet fully awakened. If the relationship is reciprocated, that is, if someone like Jesus is surrounded with disciples who give him love and gratitude back, they may never fully awaken. If they’re not, their compassion will find no outlet, and it will make them suffer further. This is just the last layer of the dream, the final delusion of Nirvana.
