Can one who has attained Nirvana feel pain?
Physical pain - yes, absolutely. For as long as the body is alive, it experiences physical pain. The stories about sages who couldn’t care less are actually not representative of the state of authentic Nirvana. They are representative of the state of being heavily immersed in bliss associated with truth realization. So those sages of whom we heard were absorbed in bliss, drenched in bliss, they were deeply absorbed in their minds, and so they meditated in blissful ecstasy, and this bliss was carried into their daily activities as well. But in not caring for their bodies, they were, themselves, deluded.
Said bliss can persist for a very long time, sometimes even years and years, and that was my experience, also.
But bliss is not truth. Even bliss must be let go of, even bliss is a sign of ignorance. Bliss is always temporary, bliss and the deepening of understanding come together. We could say that bliss is an experiential side effect of letting go of falsehoods, but it is not truth, it is a side effect. Authentic insights are always painful, and bliss is simply another side of that pain, it is its opposite, and so it follows it. And thus, if bliss is the foreground of your current experience, there’s still more pain in you. If you are immersed in bliss, you are still clinging to bliss, there’s more.
So, physical pain - yes, most definitely. All enlightened beings experience physical pain, just like everyone else.
Emotional pain - no, it is not possible. There’s no emotional pain and suffering in authentic Nirvana. All feelings are pain, and in authentic Nirvana, emotion is absent.
