Does doing DMT lead to spiritual enlightenment?

No. It can give you a glimpse, but nothing else. DMT is an extremely potent, but short-lasting psychedelic. It can zip you through the layers of your dreams very fast, and show you a taste of the so-called “Source consciousness”, but then you’re back, and you’ve just had a tremendous experience which your ego will store in memory and then try to make some sense of it. And it will. It can make you spiritual, and make you believe all sorts of stuff, read spiritual and esoteric books with the illusion of understanding, and none of that is enlightenment, but the danger is you will believe it is. If you already accepted the idea that psychedelics do not take you to “outer” realms, but simply show you the contents of your unconscious mind, then there will be little harm in doing DMT.

Otherwise it’s much better to peel the layers of your dreaming slowly, one by one, and give yourself time to integrate the experience. And for that reason LSD is a much better tool. It’s long-lasting and there’s some scientific evidence that LSD promotes new neuron growth and connectivity more so than any other psychedelic. Don’t take too high a dose. Initial discomfort, release of emotion, some fear is all good, but any dose that makes you completely lose control and get lost into the experience, takes you to “higher realms” etc. may just reinforce your beliefs in the short term, even though it might still be productive in the long-term.

Much better to take it slow, give yourself time and peel the layers like an onion. Enlightenment is not diving to the bottom of the well to see the diamond underneath, it’s drinking the well and holding the diamond in your hands. Don’t dive, drink.
