What would happen if every person in this world is spirituality enlightened?
It is very hard to say, but I don’t see how it is not possible. It’s possible. But as a society, we are probably centuries away from that (if not more), and we might self-destruct before that happens, if it ever happens. I even used to speculate that ego is the origin of “The Great Filter” in cosmology, but this is a baseless speculation, because there is no reason to assume all intelligent life develops ego at a certain stage of evolution. It might be a purely human phenomenon, our unique “quirk”.
Ego is basically obsessed with things that don’t matter, and elevates them over things that do. It is highly emotional and highly irrational. So all the absurd irrationality in our society would go away. Things that really do matter would take precedence, easily and effortlessly, without much conflict or politics which we observe now. Climate change, healthcare, poverty, homelessness etc.
Technological progress and science would not cease. Human brains are incredible in their capacity for curiosity and creativity, and those are wonderful pursuits, which make life more comfortable and interesting. If anything, they would intensify because people spend an inordinate amount of energy in life on interpersonal drama and suffering.
The conflict between profit and environment is an egoic conflict, not a scientific conflict. Same can be said about the conflict between economic development and well-being of the less fortunate. There is no conflict, it’s imaginary. It’s just how the system is set up now, because the egos in power simply don’t care, they’re obsessed with other things.
Opinions about what to do might still vary, but, untainted with emotion, those opinions would be based on facts, and people would gladly yield to experience and research, just like it doesn’t occur to me to argue with a chemist about chemistry. Enlightenment only gives the absolute knowledge of ego due to the freedom from it, and direct knowing of experiential reality, but it doesn’t give any enhanced abstract knowledge of physical reality, or ability to predict physical events, that’s the pursuit of logic and science. So debate would still happen, but it would resemble a scientific debate, not a political one. There’d be no personal conflict in it, no emotional manipulation or pursuing hidden agendas.
There would be no misery, no sorrow, no drama, just endless enjoyment of life. In our current stage of technological development, it is pathetically easy to provide everyone with basic necessities of life, which we would all do very quickly. It’s just not what we focus our collective effort on, in this society. Combined military spending of all nations would alone probably easily account for that.
Improvements on top of basic needs (food, shelter and healthcare), although empty in enlightenment, are still tremendous joy and would be big fun for people to work on. Best people in all fields love what they do, it has nothing to do with ego. Competition could still be used to achieve the best results, but it wouldn’t be emotional or personal, just part of the process, an expression of creativity.
There would be no violence or physical cruelty, both to animals and each other. There could still be some consumption of meat and consensual violence, for example, fight sports. Family structures would be quite diverse. There’d probably still be money as means of exchange. Nothing wrong with money.
Basically, utopia. But there’s a but.
Arts would be quite different. Drama would basically disappear as an art form. Storytelling probably wouldn’t, but it would be nothing like the modern storytelling, which mostly revolves around drama, not adventure or curiosity. The majority of art now emphasizes emotional experience. Most art is, strangely enough, purely egoic in its core. The art of an enlightened society would be mostly about sensual, aesthetic or intellectual experience. Laughter and surprise won’t disappear from storytelling, but what’s a good story without shame, guilt, pride, yearning or interpersonal conflict? Not much. Maybe only adventure or comedy. Music and dancing will not disappear, they are tremendous fun for the body and senses. Maybe new art forms targeting body and senses will appear, something we cannot imagine now.
If an average person from today suddenly woke up in this world, it would be their biggest nightmare. This world would appear insufferably boring, bland, too equal, with almost no entertainment for the soul. On top of that, every person in such world would appear weird. Yes, you can laugh and dance with them, but there’s no drama, no conflict, no intensity, no pain, they are all relaxed. And they also consider all your tensions supremely weird. Such person would probably start going insane very quickly. That is, their ego would start to die and they’d be going towards enlightenment. There’s no way someone would be able to preserve their ego in such world. The only question would be to watch over the poor soul so that they don’t commit suicide, but otherwise it would be just be a matter of time.
