Do awakened people recognize other awakened people?

Depends on what you mean by that.

There are no awakened people, strictly speaking. There are just awakened egos. They actually can and do recognize each other, that’s true. All egos recognize similar egos, even if subconsciously.

Then there’s self-realization, the state of oneness, infinite consciousness, the state where most of the teachings come from. Such beings also can and do recognize each other, but they can’t recognize “awakened” people, they are just regular people for them. The saying “it takes a Buddha to recognize a Buddha” is coming from here. There’s no ego in this state. An honest spirtual seeker (which means he wouldn’t call himself “awake”) could recognize a Buddha by kindness, equinimity, warmth etc.

Then there’s full enlightenment, which is beyond oneness, beyond any teachings, beyond infinite consciousness, loving awareness and all that. It is indescribable and nothing can be said about it. Such beings don’t and can’t recognize each other, and they don’t see a difference between “enlightened” people and “regular” people. There’s no ego nor egolessness in this state. No one can recognize them as well.
