What is the position of Vedanta regarding suicide?
I don’t know what position on suicide the Vedanta school holds. But if you want a position on suicide from an authentically enlightened master, I have made my position on suicide very clear here:
What is the biggest mistake you have ever seen caused by ego?
Suicide is the biggest mistake you can possibly make. Your life is sacred, your body is sacred, your body is life itself. Never kill life. Killing life is the worst you can possibly do. There is no greater misdeed, there is no greater stupidity. Life is sacred, it is a gift to behold. Life is truly a treasure. Treasure your life!
But during the course of life we all sometimes feel somewhat suicidal. Almost never obsessively, sure. But sometimes it happens, also. And during the process of spiritual awakening, it is almost bound to be obsessive at some point, because enlightenment is, strictly speaking, a suicide happening in the mind. The ego surrenders to truth. But you think your ego is you, so to you it can sometimes feel suicidal. It is entirely, completely normal. And so, the temptation to commit suicide may arise, multiple times, and it is entirely normal. But it passes, it always passes.
The whole life moves you towards spiritual awakening, the whole life moves you towards the death of the ego, it moves you towards Buddhahood. So the periods of suicidal ideation sometimes happen in life, also. I myself rarely suffered suicidal ideation in life, maybe just a tiny bit during my frequent depressions, but I suffered a tremendous amount of suicidal ideation in various stages of the spiritual path, starting with my last, biggest depression (sometimes called “the dark night of the soul” which I suffered without knowing anything about spirituality) all the way up to maybe the middle point, when I was finally able to experience fear without any traces of suicidal ideation. It can be difficult, very difficult.
So, never commit suicide, my friends. Never. Suicidal ideation is entirely natural on the spiritual path. The only exception is when your body is in severe physical pain, you’re too old to want to live, because you have a terminal illness, etc. Basically, for the very same reasons euthanasia is legal in some countries, and I absolutely support euthanasia. But most people commit suicide due to emotional pain. Never do that. There’s no amount of emotional pain your body isn’t able to take. Your body is a miracle.
Just don’t do anything, do not oblige. Don’t let the voice command you. You are not the voice in your head, the voice in your head is the only one who can even suggest suicide as an option. Have you ever considered why animals don’t commit suicide? They don’t have that voice that can even suggest such a stupid thing, and animals aren’t stupid. Suicide is tremendously stupid, it is the biggest mistake. For as long as you are alive, you’re doing fine. You are not this voice, you are just hearing this voice, this voice is not who you are, you are forgetting it. Don’t listen to it, it does not command you. The body will take care of itself, if you let it. Meditate, eat, sleep, walk, spend more time outside - it’s gonna be alright, I promise you.
If the Vedanta school’s position on suicide differs from mine in any significant way, they are all idiots.
