Why do some people hold onto myths and fantasies about enlightenment?
It cannot be otherwise. Enlightenment is the utter destruction of all myths and fantasies. It’s the complete and total let go of all your dreams and hopes, all illusions and all delusions. By its very definition, before that happens, fantasies will be present. And if you’re thinking of enlightenment or contemplating your enlightenment, you are invariably fantasizing about what it is or what it will be. It’s inevitable. Which is why contemplating enlightenment is generally counter-productive, even reading about it can also be very counter-productive. Gautama once said “all scriptures must be burned”. Only practice is productive. Many people fall into the trap of having a relatively shallow spiritual experience and then immersing themselves in spiritual literature and various traditions, with an illusion of understanding.
But the good news is that when all myths and fantasies leave you, it is impossible to miss, because there’s nothing more to fantasize about. It needs not be confirmed, only fantasies need to be confirmed by others, truth cannot be, otherwise it’s not truth. Then you can write your own scriptures and tell others to burn them also. Burn this one, too!
